Hopefully they have other strong influences in their lives. It might be other relatives, teacher, etc. They also have a very strong desire not to live like that or subject their children to it.How do children who grew up with abusive alcoholic parents learn to live a normal productive adult life?

of course they pick up everything the parent does. then when they are older they can decide if that is who they want to be. then every time they do something that their parent would do, they can stop themselves and talk themselves out of it.
Take there morals from others.
Great Parents sometimes get necrophile murders for children.
